The Croton Water Filtration Plant is a 400,000 square foot facility located beneath The Mosholu Golf Course, in the Bronx. Croton is the city’s smallest and oldest water supply system, and processes a third of NYC’s drinking water. The plant has the capacity to filter up to 290 million gallons of water each day. However, an average of 100 million gallons are filtered per day.

As a subconsultant to the URS (acquired by AECOM)/Arcadis team, CSM Engineering provided services at the plant for 16 years, beginning in 2003. We provided construction engineering inspection, electrical, mechanical, and civil inspections, architectural coordination and technical support. Some of the work included: construction of a raised bore shaft; building a new shaft and meter chamber; performing pipe torque sequence procedures for TW pipes; excavation; removal and disposal of rock and dirt to create a 600 ft x 700 ft wide and 80 ft deep pit; and the excavation of two tunnels connecting the pit to the water source.

Our staff performed mechanical inspection of equipment and piping installations including chemical metering, sludge, raw and treated water, and dissolved air flotation pumps. Piping systems inspections consisted of ductile iron, stainless steel, PVC and CPVC varying in size from 1” to 144” in diameter, installation of drainage pipes as well as new and refurbished sluice gates, new concrete walls and slabs. We observed various concrete pours and assured that the concrete was properly vibrated. Inspected rebar placement in accordance with approved shop drawings for foundations; interior and exterior masonry; walls and floor decks; and inspected roofing and ceiling installations. Our staff also conducted routine and scheduled site safety inspections; inspection for the conformance of work with the plans and specifications; prepared and maintained daily inspection reports; maintained payment records; contractor's time and material sheets; reviewed contractor's partial payment requests, and maintained as-built drawings of the work.
